Malin and Walter now in the Bay
Just to let you know our vacation time in Jackson is over. We had a wonderful time with a wonderful stranger who opened her home to us and to the Merrigans. But school is about to re open (Nov. 1..teachers, Nov 7..students) We are the last district to reopen. We are living in the upstairs of a friend/teacher's house. the downstairs is being repaired and she and her family are living in a trailer next to the house. The upstairs is high and dry and very comfortable. We are awaiting the arrival of our FEMA trailer which can now be placed in our front yard since someone gracely removed all that stuff that was in the way. We are visiting Gilly and Vicki this weekend who have an apartment in Destin. Love all the information on this blog. Thinking of all of you..miss you, but look forward to being together soon. Love

Greetings from CT
It was great to see the pictures of the BILGE. So many dear friends all looking so well. As some of you know we were to be in the Bay for the Liptons and then visit friends in LA. We hoped to start looking for a rental to buy to have as a retirement home in ten years. Anyone got any suggestions? We still plan to be there, although people here think we are nuts.
Cadet Robin Mason of United State Merchant Marine Academy spent the Labor Day weekend with us so she could try to get in touch with her family. She saw her US Marine Corps dress jacket on CNN on the Anderson Cooper show from Waveland. We tried to contact CNN but did get the local affliliate and they sent a crew to our home to interview her. She made Waveland and the coast proud in her Cadet whites and her intelligent and heartfelt interview which had the reporter near tears and it was a he. It was lead story on that night's three newscasts. She finally got to speak with Debbie and the rest of the family on Sunday evening. Next week she will be leaving for her first sea duty somewhere in the Far East.
We are excited to see that the sailors are sailing, good friends are rebuilding and that the Club goes on. It has always been the people and we look forward to the Liptons next year and retiring there to be with you.

BWYC Wins Schreck!
The team of Gilly Chamberlain, John Santa Cruz and Randy Santa Cruz won the Schreck Regatta in Pensacola on Saturday Oct. 22. The BWYC team edged a high-powered Southern Yacht Club team to take the three race Capdeveille event. Nine GYA clubs sent teams to compete.
Gilly skippered the first race with Randy and Reid Santa Cruz crewing. The team got off to a rough start and had to tack behind most of the fleet. Gilly managed to pull up to second by the end of the first beat behind SYC's Christian Gambel, with Ponchartrain Yacht Club close behind. Things stayed pretty static through the downwind leg and we stayed in second at the bottom mark. Less than perfect crew work by the senior member of the team at the bottom mark rounding and a missed shift on the second beat put us back to third where we finished. SYC won the race and PYC was second.
Eleven year old John Santa Cruz, sailing in his first race outside of BWYC Sailing Camp, put the team back into the regatta by handily winning the second race wire to wire. John, with Gilly and Randy crewing, took the heavily favored pin end start and immediately forced SYC's Scotty Sonnier over to the right and into a hole, from which he never recovered. He then fought off several challenges from PYC during the first beat to round the weather mark first by four or five boat lengths. He opened his lead by a couple of lengths on the downwind leg and broke the race wide open by catching a couple of shifts on the second beat, while PYC faded. The BWYC team sailed comfortably down the last leg and won the race by several minutes while Navy finished second and SYC climbed back into third with PYC finishing fourth.
BWYC and SYC were tied with four points each going into the last race. Randy, with Gilly and Sahra El-Hamaki crewing, skippered for BWYC while Daniel Meade steered for SYC. Randy had a middle of the line start and quickly took the lead in the race. SYC had a good start at the pin and was a couple boat lengths behind us at the first crossing a minute or two after the start. SYC challenged several time during the first leg but could not take a lead. The BWYC and SYC boats quickly pulled well ahead of the rest of the fleet, making it a match race between the two boats. Randy rounded the weather mark about five lengths ahead and held that during the downwind leg and through the second beat. About midway through the second downwind leg SYC closed to about two lengths but we caught a good shift and puff near the end of the leg and opened back to seven lengths at the bottom mark. Randy sailed a loose cover on the third beat, caught a couple of shifts and comfortably won the race by about twelve boat lengths over SYC.
Final results (unofficial) were:
1st BWYC 3-1-1 5Pts
2nd SYC 1-3-2 6Pts
3rd PYC 2-4-3 9Pts

JIB SHEET
A one page Jib Sheet was created by Vice Commodore Ted Dawson after the first post-Katrina Board-of-Governors meeting. For those of you who may not have received the Jib Sheet and use the BWYC Blog to stay in touch, below is somrwhat of a reprint of it.
The Board of Governors held its first post-Katrina meeting on the afternoon of Saturday, October 8, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Diamondhead . Attendance was very good, considering that many of the board members had to travel a long distance to be there. Nine of the twelve members were present The club manager and two former commodores were also present.
It was reported by the treasurer that the club's cash position is strong and that club activities will continue, and that the insurance on the club building was adequate. A committee was formed to handle the club's insurance claims, and the process of filing claims was initiated.
The mood of the meeting was positive - WE WILL REBUILD, and continue to be a leader in the GYA.

BWYC sailors continue to compete and win - Zak Fanberg, with Sarah Fanberg and Marcus Eagan, was victorious in the 2005 US Men's Sailing Championship for the Mallory Cup. They accomplished this just two weeks after Hurricane Katrina.
This is Zak's third consecutive Mallory Cup victory - a feat accomplished only once before in the history of the series.
congratulations seems inadequate for such an accomplishment - none-the less - COGRATULATIONS!
THE ANNUAL BWYC STOCKHOLDERS MEETING WILL BE HELD ON
SATURDAY, JANUARY 21, 2006.
Following much discussion, the Board of Govenors voted to follow the precedures and guidelines set forth in the By-laws of the BWYC, but to postpone each step 60 days.
HOW DO WE GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU?
If you have a new mailing address, phone number, cell phone number, e-mail address, please convey that information to us. The new address for the club is: BWYC
P.O. Box 3715
Bay St. Louis, MS 39521
Or, call the Vice Commodore with the information - 228.586.6075. The answer machine will be on.
"The BWYC is not a building, but a community - a community centered upon water and boats and competitive sailing. It is all of us who get together to enjoy the company of one another. A place to get together would be helpful. The water is still there. We have our boats - most of them. And, as this short "Jib Sheet" is trying to say, we will continue to get together, to sail competitively (and win), and eventually build a new club facility to be proud of and enjoy. I thank Betsy Weatherly for editing the "Jib Sheet" prior ot Katrina, and I have no desire to take over her job. This is my effort, as Vice Commodore, to communicate the actions of the Board of Governors and to keep open our lines of communication on a temorary basis as we rebuild our BWYC."

Hey everyone, this is Jen Chamberlain. I am really glad everyone is using the site!!! Check out my blog at www.biosailgirl.blogspot.com when you are bored. Missa has one too, just click to the right. Anyways, Kippy's cousin Nelson took some photos and videos that I thought you might want to see in your spare time. Click on the follwing link to see it. This letter is from Malin's brother and sister-in-law. I'm sure he would appreciate any comments you have too.:
As some of you know, Nelson spent his fall break from Georgia Tech on a service trip to Slidell, Louisiana with other Tech students to carry out Hurricane Katrina clean up work. We called Malin to let her know he would be down there and she and Walter went to Slidell on Monday and, with the permission of the student group leader, took Nelson and a friend to Bay St. Louis to show him the devastation and to help them in cleaning up the house that they hope to live in when they return to Bay St. Louis.

Flying Scot Sails
I had put the word out to many of my friends outside the GYA that BWYC had lost all our Scot sails in the storm. I asked if anyone had any to donate, we would greatly appreciate it. Well today, I received a main and jib from Jefferson Penfield from Derby, VT. I do not know this person, but will send him a note of our appreciation. It's truly amazing how the word got around. I will bring the sails over in the next couple of weeks.

Rebecca Weston Services
Some of you may remember Becky (Rebecca) Weston that was a member of BWYC for many years. She passed away September 19th from a stroke, she was 95 years old. I am glad she didn't have to see the distruction of Waveland. We will be having a grave side memorial service this Saturday October 22nd at 2P.M. in Logtown. All are welcomed! To get to logtown go west on 607 until you get to 604. Turn left and go south about 1 mile and turn right. Go west on this road for 1.5 miles and the logtown cemetery is on the right before the pearl river. If you have any questions, please contact me, her grandson, John Weston at 214-783-9499 or jweston@microsoft.com Thanks and we look forward to seeing everyone. BWYC for the next generation
I understand that at least one Board meeting has been held, and I was told by a Board member that we could expect to see some discussion of this meeting on this blog. Because of the obvious problems communicating, I would highly recommend that we use this blog to keep the membership informed as we move forward. We could even post non-sensitive information from the minutes here.
At some point, I think that we should enter a process to determine what the BWYC of the future should look like. I would agree that any such discussion at this point is probably premature. However, it would be very disappointing for the train to leave the station without a very clear picture of where we are headed. Like everything else on the coast, we now have an opportunity to renew and rebuild in a way that could be much better for future generations. Following are a few thoughts to consider:
1. What is our purpose?
2. How do we go about achieving this purpose?
3. What is the best use of our physical assets?
4. Are clubs of the future going to succeed with bars as the focal point, or should we consider some form of health oriented assets? (It is commonplace for people to spend $500+/year just for a health club membership. Also, look at the numbers of people who used the walking path in Waveland and walking track at Hancock Medical Center.)
5. Should we dedicate space for teaching & training oriented around all aspects of yachting and yachting related activities?
My purpose in bringing this up at this point is that it is better to start with a clean sheet of paper and create something than it is to change a plan that already has a great amount of time and energy invested in it. I would hope that, when the time is right, we can have an open discussion with all members involved in the process of determining what this important asset in our community will look like in the future.

Fema Trailer
We, of course, are living in Birmingham now, and have been since August 31. Fema knows this because they contacted us about every 2-3 days about going down and looking at our property, which we were not allowed to enter until mid-late September. Anyway, I got a call last Thursday, I believe, that our travel trailer was ready. Didn't know we were supposed to get one. Nor do we need one. Anyway, you can have ours!
Larry, email me at bpw@hfsllp.com to let us know your contact numbers. Ally has been dying to talk to Miriam.

Fema Trailers
Hello all we are all well. Have been camped in H'burg and traveling to the coast. Man, I left Hattiesburg 30 years ago for a reason. They actually go to church on Wednesday nights up here, no hanging out at the Yacht Club. Does anybody have any contact information on the FEMA trailers? We applied for ours back on September 22, got a call about two weeks ago from a N-SPEC-TOR who sighted our power pole, water and sewerage connections, all ok. Now we have heard nothing and cannot find out anything. I mean, Bechtel is keeping this some secret. National FEMA number doesn't help, local FEMA tent no help. I propose we do away with the Income Tax ( and a better part of the Federal Gov't) and with the money we save take care of our selves after the next storm. I'm sure if I purchased my own trailer, FEMA would show up the next day with my trailer and most likely fine me. If anybody has a working contact number (I have a pocket full of 866 and 865 area code numbers that have full voice mail boxes) it would be great to share it on this blog. House is gone, all of our boats, family and pets are fine. Larry and Beth Keith

GYA Fishboat championship
Has anyone taken charge of the team? Heard the regatta is October 22,23 and we have an automatic berth due to being defending champs.
I might be back in the area by then and available if needed. Would not mind just coming to watch. How about it Harry ? Basil ? Walter ? We need a team captain. If the young turks want to take over, that's okay too. Notice needs to be given to Buccaneer about our attendance.

betsy, scott and ally
Hi everybody. I have finally gotten the time to read all the blogs. Glad to hear from yall. We are in Birmingham. I've gotten a great job, Scott is sharing an office with a friend, and Ally is enrolled in school up here. We have an apartment for now. We couldn't get into our neighborhood until a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure where my house is. I did find a piece of the deck next door and a piece of my roof across the street. Other than that, no house, just windows. My yard never looked so clean. Maybe its in the Bay, I don't know. Anyway, we have now started our war with the flood guy. Gonna be kind of hard to put a value on a 150 year old piece of furniture with only "functional value." Jerk! Anyway, we hope to be able to come down eventually, to see what progress is being made.
Oh yeah, I just told Bishop. We had initially left our Santana 525 in the middle of the bay, just in front of John and Leslie Dane's house, just to get it away from other structures. I don't see it in the Bay, so I'm not sure where it went. I feel it went toward BSL, or maybe even Slidell. I don't even care. However, the boat we had up the Jourdan River we still don't know about. It was in Gar Lake or something like that. We heard that Gene Taylor's boat made it, but of course it was slightly larger than ours. If anyone has the means, and wants to take a spin up the river, could someone check. It is a white C&C 26 named Lorelei. The name is on the side, not the transom. Betsy Weatherly

Have youe seen this ketch?
I lost my boat "Christopher Robin", black hull, white top, 2 masts.
I tried to whistle a tune, nothing; sing a song, nothing; use ESP, answer from martians only.
Seriously guys, I reported her to MS and AL authorities with the hope somebody will contact them so them will contact me.
At the stern she says registered in Fairhope, AL.
Please contact me, Mauro, at:

I suspect the boat is standing among trees and difficult to see from the road, so if by chance you see her I will be very grateful if you tell me. Katrina happened just a month after I bought her. No chance of enjoying her properly.
My intention was to spend weekends wandering in BSL, but I had surgery and am recovering so exercise is out of the question for now.
I will love to see her in BWYC in her slip, and I'm sure you would too 'cause she's beautiful (ask Bernie or Judy).
God Bless,
Mauro.

Looking for assistance
Hi Folks,
I am looking for someone who is willing and able, I can hire, to retrieve my boat from a debris pile when the cleanup gets going near it. The trailer is retrievable I think also. This is the Proline 17. Let me know if you can help. My phone in N Carolina is 252 533 0378 and email at jreeves@datasync.com. Of course, if retrieved then I will need a mechanic.
Please folks, keep this blog alive. Those of us in exile are starving for news about the Bay and our friends scattered all around. If you move back, let us know. The blog is a great resource for us all to keep in touch.
I went into exile and am just beginning to come back to life. Got myself and the animals comfortable, found a new home for Cocoa in Natchez and I am sure that she is happier than ever. Colleen loves being the only dog. The "Chamberlain" cat has an awful habit of thinking that my arm is a toy to be attacked. Any cat psychologists out there ? I have a new computer that can fit in my car with the few other belongings and I am being very careful about acquiring any more "stuff." Colleen has more furniture than I since she was given one of those stands that holds the food and water dishes. This is a beautiful place, not quite in the mountains, but on a lake and I have plenty of room if someone is driving by. It is the N Carolina -Virginia border between interstates 85 and 95. Guests are welcome. I plan to be here another 2 to 3 weeks, maybe the end of October. Hoping to see the leaves turn but to get out before it gets real cold. Certainly will not be back during hurricane season, 2005.
Good luck to those with the fortitude to stay and continue fighting the mess. Wish I could be with you but it was bigger than me. Everything was overwhelming.

Appenzel
Anyone know who may own a sloop named Appenzel with a home port of Long Beach which is leaning up against what used to be my boat shed on Jourdan River?

Wadewitz Results-Cont'd
In the Sunfish fleet...BWYC had two representatives. Anne (Todd's) and Clinton Edwards. Anne beat Clinton 3 out of 5 races. Hopefully she keeps that forward momentum next weekend as she defends her Sunfish Women's North American Championship Title in Houston, Tx.
Also...Chad Edwards in the Optimist Green Fleet competed against three other Optis.
The Fish and PHRF class also had reprsentation.

Saints MNF Dinner Thanksgiving weekend.
The Saints play the Jets Sunday night, November 27. Judy has come up with a great idea of hosting a "Monday Night Fo0otball Dinner" for that game.
I can talk to Rick about a kitchen trailer that he bought. We could do the dinner at the airport where we have our camp set up. If he's up for it, I'll put directions & such up here.

Close but no cigar - Click "View" over to the right --->
We finished second at Wadewitz. Pontchartrain won. Not sure, but I think we were tied.
Gilly had a questionable start but fixed it quickly & won the first race. Harry sailed second and had a little better start and finished second. Seeing the trend here, Randy sailed third and figured the bad start thing was the way to go, so he was over early and had to go way back. He was in second at the first mark, way out in front of the third place boat, but couldn't catch the leaders.
Katherine sailed fourth and fought hard to push Pontchartrain back to third, but in doing so, she lost them and finished fourth about one foot behind David Bolyard.
I sailed last and after spending three of the races guarding our ice chest (very closely), I was ready to pounce on Pontch. We kinda lost track of the time and didn't have the greatest of starts, but managed to get ahead of them at the weather mark - which I proceeded to run over.
The 360 cost us Pontch, but we ran 'em down and got by them at the leeward mark. We pushed them back to 6th, but didn't have enough runway to catch enough boats to win the regatta.
It sure was a pleasure getting out there, thinking about winning a race, not post Katrina.
Many thanks to Fairhope for running the event - by the way, they don't have a club either.
