Crew Positions?

Whoever responded about crew positions...:
Can you call Brian (985-774-9558 or 985-781-3298) and let him know dates/times when ya'll practice if it's ok if he practices with ya'll? Our computer at home died and I'm checking this blog from work, which I won't be able to continue to do. If he goes to Fairhope this weekend, would he be able to crew. Is Victoria a boat or a race?

Monk Smith Regatta

Don't forget the races this weekend. GMAC who is sponsoring the PHRF Fleet has invited us to party with them.

Cathy & Brian Carson

Keep watching this blog, our website and gya.org for upcoming events. There won't be many between now and February, but there will be at least a few.

In the meantime, consider the Victoria. We have seven in our club now (Fred Eagan, Nick Doty, myself, Cathy Eagan, John Santa Cruz, Mac Cady, and my girlfriend) and the number should increase. We're practicing in Diamondhead as frequently as we can. We also travel to Mandevielle to practice with a group from Pontchartrain Yacht Club. We will be attending a big regatta in Houston in January.

Pete Morrill

has returned to the Coast; he wishes me to tell everybody that his new address is
8851 Moana Laua Way
Diamondhead, Mississippi 39525
Telephone: 228-586-6887
He is not able to access his email, so please contact him the old fashioned way.

Crew needs to race

Brian Carson is looking for any crew positions on any upcoming local regattas this winter and spring. He is a Jr. member, won the Cock of the Walk this past summer.
Email me (I'm Brian's Mom, Cathy) at sailergal@bellsouth.net or call Brian at 985-774-9558.

Monk Smith

What is the story with the Monk Smith this weekend? Who's sailing? I guess I have a boat cause I contacted the right people. It'll be a fun regatta.

Gilly

There is one FS at FYC. Bishop should bring red over to race. The Sunfish and Optimists are coming, too.

Katrina modeling info

The preliminary Navy weather data is available on Gene's website: www.house.gov/genetaylor/
The models show clearly that the max wind was well ahead of the max water.
The winds shown are sustained winds only (not the much higher gusts) or any tornadoes. As more data becomes available, the website will be updated for general use. Hope it will help all of us. Margaret

Request from Bonnie & Van Tanner

I am posting the following email I received from Bonnie & Van Tanner:

Dear Brenda,

Van and I need the help of the Club membership and would appreciate a general e-mailing from the Club.

My insurance company is saying that the storm surge came before the winds blew. I've heard from others that the wind blew for quite awhile before the storm surge and that there were also tornados in the area. If anyone has any information for me please email me ASAP. ybtart@earthlink.net.

To those of you that do not already know, Van and I -- along with Sasha (dog) and Oliver and Abigail (cats) are in Winter Park, FLorida. We have been fortunate to be able to lease a house that we moved into last week. Our street address is 1827 Mizell Avenue, Winter Park, FL 32789. My cell phone is 407-739-8827. We don't plan to get a land wired phone at this time.

Again, any information regarding the winds, intensity befor water is paraticularlly important as is any information regarding tornadic activity.

Thanks again for all the information you've been sending out. Look forward to seeing the Club getting off the ground (out of the water?) next time we're back in the area.

Found boat

Just an update. Bryce Gex sent someone from the marine patrol out to where we thought our boat would be, and it was found, about 60 yards inland, broken mast, hull appeared to be in good condition (at least from the angle they could see), and the outboard was still on it. We are going to attempt to retrieve the outboard and anything else on the boat in the next few days.

Also, the "engineer" assigned to our "house" by my homeowner's insurance called yesterday and said he would be by there today to make his determination (educated guess) regarding wind and hail. He said that most of the homes on the water were being determined 100% flood, and that those not on the water (and we're lucky enough to be considered one of those) have been getting 10% to 20% wind and hail. Of course, I begged for mercy.

Hope everyone is doing well. Happy Thanksgiving!

Bay wins Cajun Country Championship

Bishop's Wind Adjuster comes through in Cajun Country Champs
Eight boats sailed in the 2005 Cajun Country Championship including four past champions. Pelican Yacht Club hosted the event on False River November 19th. Three races were scheduled and the fleet was to return to the club after one race to enjoy the jambalaya being cooked during the race by one of PYC's members.

Bishop, who likes the light shifty stuff, with Tom Baker crewing, took the start in a big lefty and had Luther Carpenter in thier bad air. Luther immediately tacked away and cleared his air, while Bishop waited a bit to get up to speed. When he tacked back, Luther had punched nose out by three boat lengths as the breeze moved back to the right and opened up a 200 yard lead on the first leg of a W2. As Luther rounded, the breeze died and he decided to sail a high angle to the right.

Bishop noticed a line coming off the opposite shoreline and chose to jibe-set. The breeze filled and sailing around Luther, he built up a 10 boat length at the leeward mark. From this point, it was by the book, covering upwind and staying between Luther and the finish line downwind.

The fleet sailed in for lunch in the dying breeze and never returned to the race course, so the regatta was over.

BWYC on MSNBC.com

There is a good write up on Wednesday night's cook your own on the "Rising from the Ruins" section of the MSNBC.com site.

http://risingfromruin.msnbc.com/2005/11/yacht_clubbing.html

It has audio as well (be sure to press the play button and turn your speakers on) Cary T. is talking and it sounds like everyone is having a good time.

Katie, Charlie and I are in Memphis for the time being..hope to be back down soon. We're getting go to a lot of Ole Miss games, but that's not much fun these days with the way they are playing....

Cold, but Woody Nero's pyrotechnical talents made it bearable.

Randy wins GYA Flying Scot Champs

November 12-13
Pensacola Yacht Club

Eight boats registered for the 2005 Jubilee Regatta which doubled as the GYA Individual Flying Scot Championship. The Scots sailed out in 18 to 22 knots and BWYC's two reps (Randy with Katherine and Mia & Bish with Cindy and Tirza) were the last two to drop thier boats. Randy headed out on the jib, raising the main on the way, but it got jammed up top. Bishop stopped to help and they had it fixed in just a few minutes and as they made thier way out to the course, the race started. Nine minutes later, Bish and Randy got through the line. PYC's Neil McMillan was leading the race at the first leeward, but flipped and sank. Another boat could not finish the race. Only five boats started on time, and there were now only three left. Just short of the second weather mark, Bish caught one of them finishing third two minutes behind the leader, but Randy just missed him and finished fifth. The RC decided to send us in after that one.

As it turns out, both Bay boats started too late and were scored DNS (9 points). bummer.

Sunday, four races were sailed in 3 - 8 knots and Randy made it clear immediately that he still wanted to win the regatta, winning the first three races! Bishop could only manage 3, 3, 2, 1 on Sunday, finishing 4th while Randy's second in the last race was good enough to win the event.

Full moon Grill your own

Wednesday, the 16th, weather permitting, some of us will be grilling on the yacht club beach. Moon rises at 5:22 pm so come join in on a deautiful evening. There are two grills scheduled to be there for all to use so if you bring a large group, bring another grill along. Of course, you also need anything that you want to eat, dring or sit upon. All are welcome and hopefully the weather will cooperate. Colld is not the problem, but we do need a clear sky ! Please arrange for that.

Trophy cases at BWYC

Does anyone know who supplied or built the original large trophy cases in the Trophy Lounge? I'm sure the bigger ones were built on-site, as they were too big to get out the doors. The other smaller cases - I don't know if they were built by an individual, or were purchased. I'm trying to come up with the costs for the insurance coverage and have no idea where to look. Any help or estimates would help. Thanks, Brenda
